Search Engines
Although the word "Search Engines" tend to include all the types which are crawler based and human powered, there are quite a number of differences between the two.
Crawler Based
Search Engines that use a robot or "crawler" are popular for their large databases and and indexing capabilities. The most well known in the world is of course "Google." The robot crawls the entire site, stores all the information in a HUGE database, and follow all the links included in the site. This is done 24 HOURS per day. The frequency of visits depend on your site. Blogs, for instance get spidered more frequently because they are always adding more content. In a much more dramatic explanation, these types of search engines basically store a copy of the web on their servers.
Human Powered
Then there are Directories that depend on real people for their indexing. This usually takes months and months of work, and for a proper indexing of your site. Editors tend to receive large amounts of requests from Web Masters. The editors review each site and index it according to common sense. Some of these directories allow for a paid listing, which will give faster exposure. The most popular engine that uses Human Power is Yahoo!.
We have compiled a list of several Global Search Engines that based on experience are worth submitting your site to.
